What does "Google Certified CMP" actually mean?

Google runs a CMP Partner Program. To be listed, a Consent Management Platform must integrate the IAB Transparency & Consent Framework, pass Google's technical validation, and appear on Google's public partner list. Consentik™ is listed by name on that page — meaning Google recognizes the consent signals it sends as valid.

Do I really need a certified CMP for my site?

If you serve ads through AdSense, Ad Manager, or AdMob to users in the EEA, UK, or Switzerland, then yes — Google requires it. Without a certified CMP, Google restricts personalized ad serving to those users, which directly reduces your ad revenue.

How is this different from just having a cookie banner?

A plain cookie banner only shows a notice. A certified CMP also generates a valid IAB TCF consent string, passes the four Google Consent Mode V2 signals, and communicates each visitor's choice to ad vendors in a format Google and the ad-tech ecosystem accept. A banner alone does not keep your ad serving eligible.
